It is located in the municipality of Rincón de la Victoria, about 10 km from the city of Málaga. It is excavated in a limestone promontory forming a cliff on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. It is believed to have been formed around the Jurassic period.
Its name comes from a legend about a treasure of the Almoravid royalty, which is said to have been found inside the cave.
